Solo: A Star Wars Story (English) Review

[ad_1]

A little over four decades ago, in 1977, the first film in the epic Star Wars saga (that would extend over years to come) released with the release of A NEW HOPE. Now after nine films in the saga, we see the release of a spin off story line that brings fans in touch with the origins of one of the most loved characters Han Solo. But will this new age space western do justice to the mammoth legend of Han Solo or will it like so many other spin off/ origin satires falter, is the question of the hour.

Movie Review: Solo: A Star Wars Story (English)

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY follows the escapades of Han Solo before he became the legend. Starting off from the early days, the film depicts the squalor that Solo came from that was ruled by the tyrannical Lady Proxima and his constant schemes and efforts to pay his way out. Besides this like most of the films in the saga, this one too features a budding love story angle between Solo and Qi’ra. But will the two young romantics find a way out of the hell hole or will they fall prey to the Empire’s growing power is what forms the rest of the film.

Starting off one must bear in mind that the happenings in SOLO are dated before the rebellion came into being. In fact the film goes on to depict the rise of the Empire into a force to reckon with. While at the same time laying the base upon which the legend of Han Solo is built. If that wasn’t enough, through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future co-pilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

First things first, with director Ron Howard at the helm of the film, one expects nothing less than a visual spectacle. Known for films like APOLLO 13, A BEAUTIFUL MIND and more recently RUSH and INFERNO, Howard brings with him, expectations of a space western film on epic proportions. However, unlike Howard’s previous cinematic outings, SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY offers little scope for sweeping cinematic visuals. Despite this, when given the chance to depict a world that has been ravaged by time, Howard works his magic with aplomb. Going into SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, viewers are already aware of the fact that it will feature some of the high points of Han’s life that eventually made him the smuggler with a heart of gold, unfortunately this exact premise hampers the entire telling of what could become an epic due to the limited scope to explore unknown avenues, a detail upon which most of the film in the Star Wars franchise that thrived. But despite this, Howard has managed to pull together an enjoyable film that sadly looks like a series of highlight from a character’s life.

Coming to the performances, Alden Ehrenreich is no Harrison Ford, but he does manage to do a commendable job with the role of Han Solo. Joonas Suotamo as the lovable Chewbacca and Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian are sorely underused. Despite having prominent roles in the film, both their characters (though only supporting roles) appear to be greatly under developed and half baked. One wishes that both Chewbacca and Lando were given more meatier chunks to explore the entire depth of their characters. But it is the roles of Woody Harrelson as Beckett and Emilia Clarke as Qi’ra that come across the most dejecting. In fact, both good actors in their own right fall flat with a narrative that focuses on Solo alone. While one wishes that these two were used more to their full potential being a Han Solo film, they are relegated to the shadows serving only as waypoints to take the story forward.

However, the biggest drawback of SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY is the writing and the narrative, with most of the suspense lost, the makers have had to rely heavily on the epic tale of Solo to develop a narrative that does justice to his character. Sadly, this does not suffice. Instead the film comes across as a rather poor attempt at developing a new story line to encash on an epic saga that has neared the end of its money making heydays. Simply put, with an underwhelming story and weak narrative SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY is devoid of that charm and charisma that have over the years endeared the epic of STAR WARS to so many fans.

Even the background score of the film, unlike most Howard directorial seems greatly underused. With a fall back to the now legendary Star Wars theme every now and then, this new venture offers very little to the viewers. But it isn’t all downhill. Though limited, the action and race sequences are well shot and choreographed but one wishes there were more. The CGI too though done well could have been so much better had the story line of the film given room to develop a bit more.

On the whole, SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY leaves you with a somewhat empty feeling. With nothing new to tell in the story and very little scope to deviate from the past, the film becomes just another run of the mill cinematic outings that is developed to cash grab the last bits of money from a fading franchise. At the box office, with the John Abraham starrer Parmanu releasing alongside the film, SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY might just face a hard time raking in the numbers.

Solo: A Star Wars Story Trailer #2: I've Got A Really Good Feeling About This

[ad_1]

Lucasfilm has finally released the final, full-length trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story. Ron Howard promised that the new trailer would be released soon, but many did not expect it to be released on a Sunday. Howard has used social media to regularly update the progress of the Star Wars movie since he took over last summer. Most of the pictures that he shared were pretty cryptic and have since started to shed light on the status of the production. As of last week, the score was finished, and the digital effects were almost complete.

We received our first look at the Solo movie in February during the Super Bowl rush and Star Wars fans criticized the debut footage for not showing enough of Alden Ehrenreich's young Han Solo. However, the new footage has more of the young Solo while being extra careful not to give anything away. The new trailer gives just enough to leave fans wanting a lot more, which is exactly what a good trailer is supposed to do. The good thing is that there's only a little over a month to go before Solo hits theaters.

One of the villains in the Solo is Enfys Nest and we recently learned that the character is played by a woman, though the identity of the actor behind the mask remains unknown. Enfys Nest leads a band of marauders called the Cloud Riders and according to new reports, the character actor is contracted for two more movies. There's still plenty that isn't clear about the character, but it certainly seems that a sequel could come along, depending on the success of Solo.

As for tracking, Solo is looking to debut just below Rogue One, is set to take in $150 million opening weekend, which is just shy of the $155 million that Rogue One pulled in. Additionally, the forthcoming standalone Star Wars movie is estimated to end up with a final box office total of anywhere from $390 million to $475 million, which would put it below Rogue One's total of over $532 million. Solo is coming out right in the middle of a very busy summer box office with Infinity War and Deadpool 2 in close proximity.

After months of waiting, we finally have the new trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story and it looks even better than the initial footage that we were treated to at the beginning of the year. From here on out, this is the last full-length trailer that we will get until the movie hits theaters on May 25th. However, we will more than likely get some new TV spots and some more promotional tie-in commercials along the way. It looks that the promotional campaign has taken a cue from The Last Jedi and Infinity War with a highlight on secrecy, so we won't really have to worry about spoilers until Solo premieres at Cannes on May 15th. New Solo International Trailer Takes Han Prisoner

[ad_1]

Buckle up for some more Solo footage. Disney and Lucasfilm have just revealed a German trailer for the upcoming Star Wars standalone movie, which offers new shots, including a good amount of Paul Bettany's villain, Dryden Vos. As of right now, there is no real indication that Dryden Vos has any relation to the Jedi Quinlan Vos, but given that we see Bettany's character wielding some bladed weapons, don't be surprised if we get some sort of canon connection in the actual movie.

While this Solo: A Star Wars Story trailer is entirely in German, the lines spoken by Dryden Vos translate to, "Give me a reason not to kill you" and "You will have to be careful for the rest of your life," according to the fan site Star Wars News Net. Beyond that, there are a few select action shots and landscape shots that are new. Nothing mind-blowingly significant, but the footage all looks great.

There are still a lot of questions about this movie and whether or not it can actually please fans of the franchise, but it does look like a Star Wars movie. If it feels like a Star Wars movie when it comes out, Lucasfilm may have bailed themselves out of an impressively bad situation. Ron Howard earned himself a sole directing credit for his work, which began shortly after Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired. The duo finished shooting almost the entirety of the movie when Lucasfilm let them go. Howard had to come in and, instead of just doing some reshoots to patch it up, he wound up reshooting the majority of it.

A great many fans still have hesitation, understandably so, about Alden Ehrenreich's Han Solo. For one, we haven't seen a ton of him speaking and interacting with other characters in the trailers for Solo: A Star Wars Story. Beyond that, it's hard to imagine anyone else taking up the mantle of Harrison Ford's iconic character. But if the young actor can pull it off, this movie could be just what Lucasfilm needs right now after the divisive movie that The Last Jedi became. It also recently came to light that Ehrenreich has a three-picture deal with Lucasfilm. So if this goes well, we could be seeing more young Han Solo in the future.

Solo: A Star Wars Story arrives in theaters on May 25, which means it will have only been five months since the release of The Last Jedi. That's by far the shortest gap between movies in the franchise ever. It also diverts from Disney's strategy of releasing the movies in December, which has paid off handsomely. Will this strategy pay off? We won't have to wait much longer to find out. Be sure to check out the new Solo: A Star Wars Story trailer, courtesy of the Star Wars Deutschland YouTube channel, for yourself below.
